Why SPF in Your Makeup Is Not Enough

Many foundations, tinted moisturisers, and powders now include SPF, but relying on makeup alone is not enough to protect your skin.

To reach the SPF level written on the product (for example SPF 30 or 50), you would need to apply a much thicker layer than you realistically use for makeup. Most people apply foundation in thin layers, which means you are only getting a fraction of the protection you need.

SPF also needs to be applied evenly and in the correct amount to be effective. With makeup, coverage is often focused on certain areas, leaving parts of the face under-protected or just too thin.

Another key factor is reapplication. Sunscreen should be reapplied during the day, especially in strong sun exposure. This is difficult to achieve with makeup alone.

For these reasons, SPF in makeup should be seen as an added bonus, not your main source of sun protection.

So remember to use SPF 50 daily under your makeup, and 3 finger stripes is the amount needed to fully protect the skin. If you want to be a pro, add an SPF 50 spray to reapply it over your makeup during the day! I love it!
